Automotive Webnet Exemplifies the Future of Broadcasting on the Net
AUTO CENTRAL; November 19, 1998 -- Leading the way in creating interactive television networks on the Internet, The Auto Channel has announced the addition of three television shows and one radio program to its weekly Internet broadcast schedule. The four new shows are AUTOLINE DETROIT; SPEEDWAY HEAT; BOBBY LIKIS CAR CLINIC; and DRAG RACING TONIGHT. With the four new programs The Auto Channel now offers a total of 14 weekly episodic television and radio programs: more category-specific streaming media content than any other Internet entity. All shows are initially broadcast either live or from tape at a designated day and time and then archived for continuous on-demand access.
AUTOLINE DETROIT is a "Face The Nation" style of program airing on Detroit's PBS affiliate, WTVS. The show is hosted by John McElroy and presents insight and analysis of the auto industry from weekly guests. SPEEDWAY HEAT is produced by Time Warner Cable in Foxboro, Massachusettes, and features highlight coverage of Northeast motor sports competition. BOBBY LIKIS CAR CLINIC is actually a "televised" version of a nationally syndicated live two-hour radio program. DRAG RACING TONIGHT is a new, live show produced by Connecticut radio station WAPJ inconjunction with The Auto Channel. The weekly Monday night 30 minute program recaps all the action from the weekend's activities.
Currently, TACH features nearly 500 different streaming video programs and over 1,000 streaming audio programs. Most of the video programs have total-running-times of 30 to 60 minutes, some are 2, 3, and even 4 to 5 hours in length.
In anticipation of general acceptance and use of higher bandwidth Internet connectivity, such as DSL, cable modem, and satellite delivered service, The Auto Channel has recently begun encoding all new television shows for 256kbs viewing. TACH is also hoping to complete the process of re-encoding all previous streaming video programs for 256kbs viewing by the 2nd quarter of 1999.
Alphabetically, the 14 weekly programs are AMERICA ON THE ROAD, AUSTRALIAN INSIDE MOTORSPORTS REPORT, AUTOLINE DETROIT, AUTOWORLD, BOBBY LIKIS CAR CLINIC, CART/INDYCAR RACING REPORT, CYBER RACING TODAY, INSIDE TRACK, OPEN ROAD RADIO, RACELINE, SPEEDWAY HEAT, THE CAR GUY, THE C.A.R. SHOW, and TACH MOTOR SPORTS REPORT. A complete listing of the shows' times and direct URLs can be found at "http://www.theautochannel.com/content/cybercast/index.html".
The Auto Channel's streaming media content is in addition to more than 100,000 pages of text information and 14 searchable databases.
