IRL: Team Cheever Races for the Cure

21 August 1998

Atlanta, GA - One of the greatest privileges about racing is having the ability to mobilize many people for a great cause: Indy 500 Champion Eddie Cheever, Jr. and Team Cheever campaigning the #51 Rachel's Gourmet Potato Chips car in The Atlanta Classic 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway have united for just such a cause. On Saturday night, August 29, Eddie Cheever will make every lap count for CURE Childhood Cancer.

The CURE volunteers are garnering pledges for every lap that Eddie completes during the 208 laps of The Atlanta Classic 500. If Eddie completes all 208 laps, a 10 cent pledge will garner $20.80 for CURE and Georgia's children with cancer.

For Eddie, "I'm excited about racing in Atlanta and the chance to be a part of the CURE pledge-a-thon. Racing can be such a great and unique tool to help charities raise awareness and money for all the hard work they do in their local community. Though we are just a small vehicle for CURE's endeavors, I hope we will make a big contribution on Saturday night to their cause."

CURE was founded in 1975, when barely three out of ten children with cancer survived. CURE's mission is to fund cancer research and offer support programs and love to cancer stricken children and their families. Half of CURE's financial resources are devoted to scientific endeavors - understanding and stopping cancer cell growth in the lab while finding more effective clinical treatments for the increasing number of sick children. But children fighting cancer need more than medical care. They also need unconditional love and acceptance to cope with their illness. CURE's patient support programs help restore laughter to young hearts and heal the wounded spirits of children undergoing difficult and often painful cancer treatments. CURE also reaches out to parents and siblings to ease the overwhelming emotional burdens families endure. Weekend events, peer networking, bereavement support and assistance during clinic visits are all part of CURE's mission.

Until every child diagnosed with cancer can be healed, CURE will be there to help make each child's life a success story. If you would like to volunteer or make a pledge, please call CURE at 770-986-0035.

"My teammate Robby Unser, the guys and I are very proud to be a part of Team CURE this weekend...Racing for CURE" states Eddie.
