BARBERDODGE: Barber Dodge Pro Series-Round 8-Road America

17 August 1998

ELKHART LAKE, Wis. (Aug. 16)- Nilton Rossoni of Curitiba, Brazil started on the pole and finished atop the podium with a wire-to-wire victory in Round 8 of the Barber Dodge Pro Series at Road America Sunday morning.

Giovanni Anapoli of Montecchio, Italy followed Rossoni home to place second, while Todd Snyder of Sheffield, Mass. captured the third slot in the 40-minute timed race.

"I had a good start and during the race, I just had to do my job," said the 18-year old Rossoni, who also set a new track record for the Barber Dodge Pro Series at Road America with his lap 5 time of 2:13.418 at 109.227 mph. "I knew in the race Anapoli (drove) very well too, and was in back of me."

Rossoni used a strong start to open the race, and had opened a comfortable lead by the end of the first lap. But a yellow flag on lap 6 to remove the car of Matt Plumb from the gravel on turn 5 allowed Anapoli, who had qualified second, another opportunity to take a run at Rossoni.

The young Brazilian was not be denied his first American win, however, and used a slingshot start to pull away and take the checkered flag by a 3.932 second margin.

"I got a good start, which helped, but I couldn't do anything on the straight against him," Anapoli said.

Nicolas Rondet of Sao Paulo, Brazil finished fourth, and Jeff Simmons of East Granby, Conn. rounded out the top five. Anapoli's second-place showing allowed him to move up from sixth to fourth in the series points standings, which are led by Snyder with four races left in the season. Thomas Schie of Norway remained in second place in the title chase, while Simmons held onto the third-place slot. Gregg Borland of Elkhart Lake, Wisc. finished 13th, while Scott Mayer of Franklin, Wisc. placed 18th.
