SCCA: Borcheller, Galati Take World Challenge Wins atTrois-Rivieres

2 August 1998

TROIS-RIVIERES, Quebec, Can. ( -- With a last-lap pass, Terry Borcheller earned his second World Challenge T1 Class victory of the season, topping Peter Cunningham by 0.266-second at the Trois-Rivieres street circuit, while Michael Galati scored his first win of the season in the T2 Class.

Borcheller, driving the No. 56 Home Improvement Saleen Mustang, started the 31-lap, 46.686-mile race second, and after holding the top spot for the first 13 laps, stalked Cunningham's No. 42 RealTime Racing/CompTech Acura NSX, looking for an opportunity to make his bid for the win.

"Terry (Borcheller) and I had a really good race today," said Cunningham. "He was faster in some parts of the track, and I was quicker in others ."

As the duo encountered traffic on the final lap, Borcheller dove to the inside of turn nine on the 10-turn, 1.506-mile circuit, passing Cunningham and holding him off to the checkered flag, while Neil Hannemann, in the No. 31 ViperSpeed Dodge Viper, finished third.

"My advantage over Peter (Cunningham) was coming out of the corners," said Borcheller. "Toward the end of the race my engine temperature was getting high, and then in the last two laps it was either go or blow ^Ö luckily it lasted and here I am."

In the T2 Class, teammates Galati and Pierre Kleinubing posted a 1-2 finish after starting the 30-lap, 45.18-mile contest on the front row.

From the green flag, the T2 Class battle was a duel between Galati's No. 44 RealTime Racing/CompTech Acura Integra and the No. 43 RealTime Racing/CompTech Integra R of Kleinubing. Kleinubing had the edge at the start and led the first 19 laps before Galati was able to slip past as they worked through traffic.

Once in the lead, Galati was there to stay, holding off Kleinubing by 0.445-second at the checkered flag, with Lance Stewart earning the final podium position.

"We had a really great run today," said Galati. "Pierre (Kleinubing) was tough .. really tough, and I was just able to get by him in turn four as we went through the traffic."
