* Greg Ray qualified second for the VisionAire 500 with a 24.546 second lap (219.995 mph).
* Ray tied his career-best qualifying effort by earning the second spot in the Conseco-Foyt Dallara/Aurora/Goodyear. He also qualified second at the 1998 Indianapolis 500 in a car fielded by TKM.
* Greg Ray about qualifying: "The car was good. We picked up more time. I don't know if it was a difference in humidity or if the rain was the cause. I felt like we had a car that could be on pole. We just missed it by a little bit. I am very happy for A.J., Conseco, and the whole team. They gave me a great car. For me personally, I really wanted that pole. I gave it 100 percent. Again, when you haven't tasted the pole it makes you real hungry. We have a real good race car though."
