WOO: Haudenschild Wins His Third Kings Royal

ROSSBURG, OH (July 18) - Now Jac Haudenschild has a Kings Royal championship for each of his children.

"I knew I had to win one more of these because they give you a medal and I have three children (Justin, Racquel and Sheldon)," Haudenschild said Saturday after leading the final 14 laps to claim the $50,000 first prize in the 15th Annual Kings Royal at Eldora Speedway. "It really means a lot to me to win this race." Jac also won Kings Royal championships in 1987 and 1994.

As is his style, Haudenschild won his seventh Pennzoil World of Outlaws Series "A" Feature of the year in dramatic fashion. The #22 Pennzoil Maxim stopped pumping fuel to the engine when Jac entered the third corner during the final lap, causing him to coast under the checkered flag - only three car-lengths ahead of hard-charging Sammy Swindell.

"A fitting or something broke on the tank on the last lap," Haudenschild explained. "We put a bigger tank on for this (40- lap) race. We put plenty of fuel in on the red, but it wasn't getting where it needed to be. We just barely made it across the line. It sure scared me."

Mechanical malfunctions cost Haudenschild two other Kings Royal championships, but he was not be denied Saturday as TNN: The Nashville Network telecast the action live to a national audience.

Haudenschild, the third-fastest qualifier in the 60-car field, earned the right to start the main event outside the second row by following the Swindell brothers - Jeff and Sammy - and Steve Kinser across the finish line in the Channellock Dash.

Sammy burst into the lead as the green flag fell in the "A" Feature. He was racing away from the field when "B" Feature winner Andy Hillenburg stopped his #2 J&J in turn four after hitting the retaining wall late in the third lap.

Haudenschild, who passed Kinser early, took the low line through the second corner to pass Jeff Swindell for second place as the green flag replaced the yellow.

The caution flag was flying again the next time around when Todd Kane stopped in turn four with a flat right rear tire. Jeff Shepard, 1996 Kings Royal champion Johnny Herrera and Brooke Tatnell coasted into the pits to make repairs during the caution.

Vivarin Fast-Time Award winner Joey Saldana crashed into the wall in turn two as the race resumed.

Swindell controlled the ensuing restart and had his #1 Channellock Stealth six car-lengths ahead of Jac when he entered lapped traffic during the 11th lap. He lost his advantage seven laps later when Charlie Fisher spun on the back straightaway.

Haudenschild was unable to keep pace with the 1992 Kings Royal champion as the green flag replaced the yellow and was seven car-lengths behind Swindell when they entered lapped traffic again early in lap 25.

Haudenschild caught Swindell within two laps, however.

"We got a run on Sammy there going into one on the bottom and we were just able to slide up in front of him," Haudenschild said of the winning pass. "The Pennzoil ran great again tonight."

Seconds later, Kinser steered his #11 Quaker State Maxim high between turns one and two to pass Jeff Swindell for third place.

Keith Kauffman's flat right rear tire forced him to stop in the fourth corner late in the 28th lap. The red flag replaced the yellow so the cars could be refueled for the final 12 laps. A collision involving Dale Blaney and Daryn Pittman on the restart sent Pittman and the #21 Up Front J&J spinning in turn four.

Haudenschild raced away from Swindell as the green flag replaced the yellow and was more than a half-straightaway ahead within five laps. A broken rear end on the #8H Maxim forced Joe Gaerte to stop on the back stretch, setting up a three-lap dash to the checkered flag.

Haudenschild started building a comfortable advantage again as the race resumed, but almost lost it when his fuel system malfunctioned less than half a lap from the checkered flag.

"I have to thank Jack Elden," Jac said. "He's given me three really good guys to work on the car - Dean Bruns, Dave Kinnard and Chris Hager. A lot of teams out here just have two guys, but Jack's given me three and they do a really good job.

"Earl (Eldora Speedway owner Baltes) had the track just right. You could run pretty much anywhere you wanted to."

The victory pushed Haudenschild into a tie with Rookie of the Year candidate Tyler Walker for 10th place in the points race.

Kinser, a four-time Kings Royal champion, finished third, ahead of Jeff Swindell, Danny Lasoski, Blaney, 17th-starting Mark Kinser, Kenny Jacobs, Walker and Stevie Smith.

The World of Outlaws will head to Hales Corners Speedway to make up the May 3rd event originally scheduled for Beaver Dam Raceway Monday. The series is also scheduled to visit Knoxville Raceway Wednesday, State Fair Motor Speedway Friday, I-55 Raceway Saturday and Route 66 Raceway Sunday. WoO
