IRL: Conseco/A.J. Foyt Racing Dover Practice Notes

18 July 1998

Greg Ray
* Greg Ray was 16th quickest today with a 20.305 second lap.

* Greg Ray about practice: "We're not quite up to speed, so I guess you could say we're missing the boat. Seriously, I am just getting used to the crew and working with A.J. This is a new track for both of us. It is extremely bumpy. That is why they call it the 'Monster Mile.' " (How is working with A.J. Foyt) "He has a unique feel for the race car. He makes his decisions very quickly and 99 times out of 100 he is right on."

* A.J. Foyt (about coming to Dover) "It's been so long since I have been here. I almost drove by it when I got here. There was nothing out on the road when I was here last time for the stock car race. The track was in the country then." (Is this track safe?)

"There is no such thing as a safe race track; there is no such thing as a safe highway. I just saw a picture of me sitting in one of my old race cars and you could see my body from the waist up. It was like I was sitting on a motorcycle. Cars are 100-percent safer now than they were then." (A.J. Foyt qualified eighth and finished 19th in the USAC championship trail race here in 1969. He also won a USAC stock car race here in 1970.)
