IRL: Treadway Racing Signs Two-Year Agreement with Jason Leffler

9 July 1998

Indianapolis, IN: Midget and Silver Crown phenom Jason Leffler signed an agreement with 1997 Indy 500 Championship Team-Treadway Racing-yesterday afternoon. This agreement solidifies their previous relationship, as earlier this season Treadway Racing assisted Leffler in his pursuit of Indy car experience and provided him the opportunity to pass his IRL Rookie Test.

According to the agreement, Leffler-a California native-will continue Firestone Tire Testing with the Treadway team until a mutually acceptable level of sponsorship is secured in order for him to compete in the upcoming IRL seasons. According to Al Speyer, Motorsports Director for Bridgestone/Firestone, Inc., the tire company values Leffler's input and skills during testing. "We are looking forward to Jason's involvement in testing this year," said Speyer. "He is a rising star in the racing community and will be a valuable addition to the IRL Series."

While currently leading the Silver Crown division and a standout in the USAC Midget Series, Leffler will still be able to continue in other series unless they directly conflict with the IRL schedule. "I am very excited about the opportunities extended to me through Treadway Racing," stated Leffler. "They are a top-notch team and I enjoy assisting them with their testing efforts. Everyone has really helped to support my open wheel career and I am looking forward to a full-time ride with Treadway in the IRL Series."

Treadway Racing has made no effort to conceal their desire to reinstate a two-car effort and team owner Fred Treadway is abundantly confident in Leffler's abilities and feels that the match will be mutually beneficial. "Jason is a capable driver with demonstrated success in the Silver Crown and Midget Series and we feel that he has exceptional potential," stated Treadway. "Treadway Racing has always made an effort support and assist up-and-coming young drivers and provide them opportunities within the IRL. Jason fits the IRL vision extremely well and as a young, exciting talent, he has much to offer toward the growth of motorsports in Corporate America."

The Treadway Racing team, with Leffler at the helm, is currently attending the IRL open test at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. This will be his first effort on the 1.54-mile quad oval, and his first session with the team since passing his rookie test in early June at the Texas Motor Speedway.
