AMA, TV: Davis Looking for a Repeat at Lima
24 June 1998
WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- Will Davis of Goldsboro, N.C., is hoping to keep up his momentum at this Saturday's (June 27) 15th annual Allen County Fairgrounds Half-mile in Lima, Ohio. After winning last weekend's half-mile race at West Virginia Motor Speedway, Davis, 33, now has 18 career victories in the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) Grand National Dirt Track Series. His most recent win moved the TCR Harley-Davidson rider into third place in the series standings, 35 points behind eight-time National Champion Scott Parker.
Davis' victory in West Virginia ended a streak by Parker that had seen him win the first three races of the 1998 Grand National season. But if history is any indication, Parker could start a new streak this weekend on the Lima track, where he's collected a record seven wins over the years. Parker also holds the Lima track record, completing the 1992 25-lap final in just a hair over 11 minutes, for an average speed of 68 mph.
Davis has one victory on the Lima track, winning the 1989 running. He'll face two other former winners in Chris Carr, who took the victory in 1991, and local favorite Steve Morehead, who topped the podium in 1985 and '88.
Going into the weekend, Parker leads the Grand National Series with 85 points. Rich King is in second with 56, Davis is third with 50 and Carr is fourth with 49.
Qualifying begins at 6 p.m., opening ceremonies are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. For tickets, call (419) 478-1836.
