NHRA: Mark Whisnant Going Pro Stock Truck Racing with Chevy S-10
16 June 1998
Mark Whisnant latest NHRA sportsman star to make jump to Pro Stock TruckSTOCKBRIDGE, Ga. -- Mark Whisnant, 29, son of former Pro Stock standout Reid Whisnant, is the latest NHRA sportsman competitor to make the switch to NHRA hottest professional class, Pro Stock Truck.
The Super Gas winner earlier this season at the NHRA Pennzoil Nationals in Houston, Whisnant plans to make his Pro Stock Truck debut at the NHRA U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, driving a Chevy S-10 backed by his family owned RW Performance.
When I decided to go Super Gas racing last year the plan was to use it as a stepping stone to either Pro Stock car or truck, Whisnant said. With the trucks such an up-and-coming class right now and the cars so tough to enter into and be competitive, the truck route really was a no brainer for our team to go.
Whisnants Chevy S-10 truck will be the first Pro Stock Truck constructed by longtime Pro Stock and Pro Modified chassis builder Rick Jones. The RW Performance team plans to take delivery of the piece in early August while in the meantime testing engine and drive-train combinations with Marks Super Gas Beretta.
