AMA: Hot Shoes Slide into Dayton and Peoria

WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- The bar-to-bar race action of the 1998 American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) National Hot Shoe Series resumes June 6 at the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Dayton, Ohio, then thunders on to Illinois to the famous Peoria TT, June 7.In Dayton, the 28th running of the Old Time Newsies will have local favorite George Roeder II of Monroeville, Ohio, hoping for a repeat performance of his win in last year's 750cc Expert class. Roeder will be competing against another local favorite--the Findlay Flyer--Steve Morehead, in the June 6, AMA National Hot Shoe Series event.
Oshkosh, Wis., resident Bret Beyer will also be trying for a repeat win in the 600cc Expert class, But Beyer will have his hands full as perennial threats like Ken Coolbeth Jr., of Warren, Conn., and KTM Sportmotorcycles-sponsored Joe Kopp of Mica, Wash., are in the line-up.
Also on the bill at Dayton are a $5,000 Fergie Fhur Dash for Cash race and a $1,500 Harley-Davidson 883 contest.
Gates open at 2 p.m., with qualifying at 6:30, and the main events beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations for $13 in advance, and at the track on race day for $15. Children 10 and under are free.
As soon as the last race ends in Dayton, riders will pack their motorcycles and head west to Illinois for Sunday's TT Steeplechase at the Peoria Race Park, June 7, where 16-time Peoria TT winner and 1992 AMA Grand National Champion Chris Carr is heavily favored in the 750cc Expert class.
In the 600cc Expert class, the battle will be between Dan Stanley of Bellingham, Wash., and 1997 600cc Expert Hot Shoe Champion, Kenny Coolbeth Jr., both are tied for first place. But to take a win, either of them must first beat crowd favorite Dave Camlin of Rock Island, Ill., the reigning 1997 Harley-Davidson Sportster Performance Champion.
