NASCAR: Jasper Motorsports Joins Team ASE

28 March 1998

Mooresville, NC March 28 -- Jasper Motorsports, a NASCAR Winston Cup Series racing team located in Mooresville, NC has announced that they will be participating in a new program created by The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).

The program provides an ASE Certified Technician with the opportunity to spend four months with a Winston Cup team. Everett Billy Sutphin III of Leesburg, VA has joined the Jasper Engines & Transmissions #77 race team as a general mechanic and will be attending his first NASCAR Winston Cup Series race this weekend in Bristol, TN. Sutphin, a graduate of Catonsville Community College in Baltimore, MD, was serving as a certified professional automotive technician with Leesburg Toyota before relocating to North Carolina and joining the Jasper team. Im on cloud nine right now. I love it. Sutphin said of his new job. So far Ive helped pull motors and cleaned up the cars when the come back from the race track. I thought Id be doing more watching and learning, but they have me up to my elbows working with the guys. Its great!

Sutphin is the second scholarship recipient in the short history of the program. In 1997, ASE-certified Master Technician George Stone was placed with the Team ASE #2 Ford Craftsman Truck race team under the supervision of veteran crew chief Barry Dodson. Stone did so well with the team that he was hired permanently after his scholarship had expired. Sutphin says he hopes the same will come true in his situation. My goal is to be able to continue working for the team as a regular employee after my scholarship is over, Sutphin said recently. Ive got to do all I can to make the most of the opportunity ASE and Jasper Motorsports have given me to make a place for me in this sport.
