McGrath and Supercross Arrive in St. Louis
25 March 1998
WESTERVILLE, Ohio -- On March 28, Chaparral Yamaha's Jeremy McGrath will lead the Thor/Parts Unlimited AMA Supercross series to the Trans World Dome in St. Louis. With three-quarters of the season behind him, McGrath looks unstoppable in his quest for the 1998 series championship, but St. Louis has been the site of McGrath's undoing in the past.It was the 1996 St. Louis Supercross where Kawasaki's Jeff Emig took the checkers and put a stop to what had been a perfect season for McGrath. McGrath returned the favor in 1997, taking the St. Louis win from Emig and handing him a second-place finish in the midst of Emig's championship-winning season.
McGrath, of Menifee, Calif., won his sixth race of the season last weekend in Minneapolis and currently leads Supercross series second-place Kevin Windham by a margin of 59 points. Windham, of Baton Rouge, La., won the New Orleans round and has shadowed McGrath for the much of the 1998 season, but McGrath's six wins and four podium finishes have prohibited the Yamaha-mounted Windham from closing the points gap.
Honda's Ezra Lusk, of Bainbridge, Ga., took third place in Minneapolis and trails Windham by 13 points. Fans in St. Louis will also have the opportunity to watch 125cc Eastern Region Supercross Series leader Ricky Carmichael attempt to continue his own winning season. Carmichael, of Havana, Fla., has taken his Kawasaki to win the first five of the scheduled eight Eastern Region rounds to date.
Honda's Stephane Roncada won his first 125cc Western Region race last weekend in Minneapolis. The Frenchman Roncada is ranked third in the 125cc Western Region Supercross Series. Yamaha's John Dowd of Chicopee, Mass, placed second in Minneapolis and currently leads the Western Region series.
