Motorsports: ART's Phillips Granted Patent Pending for Laser String Device
25 January 1998
Advanced Racing Technologies (ART) of Staatsburg New York today announced that founder Rob Phillips has been granted a US Patent Pending for the design of his Laser String gauge. The two-piece laser-optical measuring system is designed to streamline calibration of suspension systems and has received wide acceptance in motor sports with sales in Winston Cup, NASCAR Super Truck, NHRA, SCCA and other series around the world. The patent pending represents another addition to Phillips portfolio of eight US patents and six publishes.
The introduction of this new laser-optical measuring device called "The Laser String" device makes string alignment procedures obsolete while aiding speed and accuracy through use of laser technology.
The "Laser String" utilizes the same race proven components applied to CART (Indycar) tech inspection system in 1996 ,1997 and again proposed for the 1998 season. The two piece modular laser system incorporates an aluminum straight edge for alignment, along with an innovative 3 axis self aligning tripod. The unique feature is the optical creation of a 45 degree laser plane beam.
Operating the "Laser String" is simple. The system is placed on its leveled tripod 1 inch from a car's rear wheel. When the carrying handle is released the device self-aligns to the rear tire, aims a vertical beam down the side of the race car and is ready to go. All alignments can be performed by one person. The laser head is multi-directional and can be aimed to the front, rear, and either side of the vehicle.
Primary uses for the "'Laser String" include; rear axle alignment, toe alignment, camber, and track offset. Combined with the ART laser toe gauge, racers with independent rear suspensions can now perform independent toe adjustments with respect to vehicle center line. The laser head can also be used without the tripod for calculating vehicle center line in chassis construction and body assembly. Placed horizontally the device can be used as a transit for leveling scales, ride heights and many other height measurements.
