Nine other Formula Xtreme riders were also recipients of the Pirelli $10,000 championship bonus fund. Stroud, of Auckland, New Zealand, won seven of nine 1997 Pirelli Formula Xtreme races and finished second in the remainder. A string of wins in the beginning of the season established Stroud as the contender, and he locked up the championship early with a win at the eighth round of the season in Sonoma, Calif. Pirelli -- manufacturer of performance tires and world-wide sponsor of championship motorsports -- will remain as the AMA Formula Xtreme title sponsor for the 1998 season.
