Notes of Interest: The "American General Finance 100" is race No. 18
of the 21 race NASCAR Goody's Dash Series schedule and the second
visit for the Series to the historic Hickory Motor Speedway this
season. In June, Robert Huffman broke all the existing Series records
in a flag-to-flag victory that was run with only one caution period
for seven laps. The qualifying record was established at 15.104
seconds at an average speed of 86.520 mph and a new race record of 30
min. 20 sec. at an average speed of 71.802 mph was also set. Huffman
again, appears to be gathering momentum as we head into the American
General Finance 100 posting an eighth, a second and a win in the last
three races. Brian Sockwell is another driver that is incredibly hot
right now, recording only one finish outside the top five (a sixth at
Southern National) in the last nine races. During that same stretch,
he has picked up three more wins to go with his Daytona victory and
established himself second in the Series Championship Point Standings
and closing on point leader Mike Swaim Jr. Three of Sockwell's four
wins have also come in front of national television audiences on ESPN
and ESPN2. Will Lady Luck continue to smile upon those who she has
courted so far in 1997, or will this fickle lady be off flirting with
someone new as the NASCAR Goody's Dash Series season begins to wind
down? We may know the answer to that question following the American
General Finance 100, Sept. 20 at Hickory Motor Speedway, Hickory, N.C.
