AMA Superbike Lineup for Sears Point Event

30 August 1997

DUHAMEL EARNS SEARS POINT SUPERBIKE POLE WITH RECORD RUN

SONOMA, Calif. -- Miguel Duhamel seems to be getting tougher to beat with each race. Saturday Duhamel rode his Honda RC45 to the pole for Sunday's American Motorcyclist Association MBNA Superbike Series race at Sears Point Raceway. Duhamel's lap at 90.122 miles per hour set a new track record on the 2.52-mile circuit.
Already the winner of three straight AMA Superbike races, Duhamel is making a strong surge in his effort to catch series leader Doug Chandler. Duhamel gained a valuable championship point for winning the pole. It marks the second pole of the year for the 30-year-old Canadian.
Chandler broke a three-year-old track record held by Australian Troy Corser during Friday's qualifying session. The defending AMA Superbike champ from Salinas, Calif., wasn't able to improve on his time Saturday and will start from second position. Mat Mladin, from Australia, on a Ducati and Tom Kipp, from Chardon, Ohio, riding a Yamaha, will round out the front-row starters.
New Zealander Andrew Stroud clinched the Pirelli Formula Xtreme title with his sixth victory of the year riding a Honda CBR900.
