Pennzoil Dodge Race Report: Raines at the Glen
26 August 1997
Pennzoil Race Report NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Parts America 150 Watkins Glen International August 24, 1997 Raines Learns Quickly in First Trip to Watkins Glen Heading into Sunday's Parts America 150 at Watkins Glen International, Tony Raines wondered if he knew the track well enough to be competitive In his second road course event of the year. During the first two days of the weekend, Raines battled mechanical gremlins and poor weather, which robbed him of valuable practice time on the 11-turn course. But during the early laps of the 150-mile NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event, Raines looked plenty competitive, moving from his 23rd starting position to 12th in 15 laps. That charge toward the front even included a scheduled green-flag fuel stop on lap two. But as the Roehrig Motorsports crew began making plans for the half-time break at lap 31, Raines informed them of a possible engine problem. Three laps later, they watched helplessly as Raines coasted down the front straightaway without power. The terminal engine problem left the team with a 33rd-place finish. "I just feel really bad for the Pennzoil crew," Raines said. "These guys thrashed awfully hard this weekend and this kind of finish doesn't do them justice. We just couldn't catch a break all weekend." The next stop for the Pennzoil team is the Virginia Is For Lovers 200 in Richmond, Va., on Sept. 4. The race begins at 8 p.m. and airs live on ESPN2.
