LUYENDYK COULD BE $125,000 RICHER, THANKS TO PENNZOIL FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (HOUSTON) May 23, 1997 - Thanks to Pennzoil Products Company, Indy Racing League driver Arie Luyendyk, who won the pole position for this year's Indianapolis 500, has the opportunity to win an additional $125,000. Two weeks ago, Arie won the $25,000 contingency award from Pennzoil for winning the pole. All Indy 500 drivers who use Pennzoil products and sport a Pennzoil decal on their entered cars were eligible to compete for this and other awards. Now, if Arie wins the race, he gets an additional $125,000 from Pennzoil. Luyendyk is one of 23 drivers who will be using Pennzoil products in this year's race. Pennzoil's contingency awards for the Indy 500 were set up as follows: Pole position with Pennzoil decal -- $25,000 Indy 500 win with Pennzoil decal -- $100,000 Indy 500 win from Pole Position with Pennzoil decal -- $150,000 If neither Luyendyk nor any other Pennzoil-affiliated team wins the Indy 500, Pennzoil will then distribute $25,000, $15,000, $10,000, $5,000 and $2,500, respectively, to the first five Pennzoil-affiliated cars to finish the race. Pennzoil is also sponsoring the "Stop. Go. Pennzoil. Crew Members Challenge", where members of the on-track media will vote for the winning team. "We will provide members of the media with nomination forms, and they will judge the crews based on speed and accuracy as well as sportsmanship during pit stops at the Indy 500," explained Tom Floyd, Pennzoil's chief marketing officer. "As the official motor oil of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Indy Racing League (IRL) and the Indianapolis 500, Pennzoil is proud to support the race with these contingency awards," said Floyd. "And while we wish all drivers, especially our own Roberto Guerrero, good luck in the race, Arie Luyendyk will be a richer man if he wins!" Luyendyk, who drives for Treadway Racing and is competing in his 13th Indy 500, was excited about starting from the pole position. "Pennzoil has really stood behind the IRL, and these awards are another example of their support," he said. "I appreciate the $25,000, but my goal is to win all of the contingency money ." Pennzoil Products Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Houston-based Pennzoil Company, and its motor oil has been America's no. 1-selling brand for 11 consecutive years.
