Chrysler to Establish Warehouse in Taiwan
01/02/97
Reuters reports that Taiwan's Taichung Harbor Bureau announced last Monday that Chrysler Corporation plans to establish a warehousing center in the harbor. The warehousing operation would allow Chrysler to import a million cars into Taiwan over the next 20 years.
Chrysler has signed contracts with the bureau, committing the corporation to import at least 16,752 cars a year, and a total of one million cars within 20 years.
Taiwan imposes 30 percent tariffs on imported passenger cars. The harbor bureau estimated that the Chrysler deal will "increase the harbor's income by more than T$21 million a year, and bring . . . an annual tariff income of more than T$3.2 billion."
Taiwan has offered various incentives to get international companies to establish regional operation centers on the island.
