Nissan Plans to Export Small Trucks from South Africa
12/03/96
Comline reported that Nissan Diesel, citing a rapid growth in small truck demand in Africa, has announced its plans to export small trucks manufactured in South Africa to eight African countries, including Kenya. Last fall Nissan became an investor in a venture that now assembles Nissan trucks in South Africa at a knockdown assembly plant. The plant currently has a capacity of 1000 vehicles per year, although Nissan plans to cut costs and boost productivity. The plant earmarks 30% of its production for export. The company will export its Condor 30 series of trucks that can haul up to 3.5 tons to Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Mozambique, and other countries. Until recently, small trucks have not been sold in Africa outside of the country of South Africa.
