California International Auto Show Announces Concept and Exotic Cars
12/02/96
Auto Show Offers Look At Futuristic Concept Cars/ Expensive Exotic Vehicles ANAHEIM, Calif., Nov. 26 -- They are the most expensive and the ones that are not for sale yet -- exotic, pre-production and concept vehicles. The 1997 California International Auto Show at the Anaheim Convention Center, open from now until December 1, has cars for the 21st Century along with $200,000-plus street machines as part of its 500 vehicle display collection. The all-new Lamborghini Diablo Roadster and Diablo Roadster Twin Turbo, the latter producing more than 700 horsepower, head the list of exotic cars you can buy right now. The two cars -- for sale locally at Platinum Motors in Santa Ana -- are distributed in very limited quantities in this country. Ford and Lincoln-Mercury have concept cars -- engineering design exercises which have features we can look for in cars of the future -- on display in their respective booths including the Ford Indigo and the Lincoln L2K. The Indigo, a high performance V-12 concept sports car which takes its lead from IndyCar and Formula I racers, features a body by Reynard, a UK-based IndyCar chassis constructor. The L2K designed at the company's California Concept Studios, is a two-passenger sports car powered by a 3.4-liter, 32 valve V-8 engine. Included in the list of pre-production cars -- those which are planned for production, but not available yet -- is the 1997 Dodge Viper GTS Coupe, with added refinement to the original Viper without altering the performance of this 450 hp, 8-liter V-10 sports car. Across the hall in the Chrysler- Plymouth booth is the much-anticipated Plymouth Prowler, a throwback to a 50's street rod, which goes on sale in the spring of '97. For truck enthusiasts, the Mazda B-Extreme concept truck offers a rugged- looking package designed for those who participate in the "extreme" sports of mountain biking, jet skiing and windsurfing. The truck has aggressive exterior features as well as the space and hardware to accommodate the "extreme" gear which goes with those sports. The '97 California International Auto Show in Anaheim at the Anaheim Convention Center is open to the public from now through Sunday, December 1 at 7:00 P.M. Regular admission is $7.00 for adults, $3.00 for children 7-12, and free for kids six and under. Senior citizens, 62 years-old and over, receive a $3.00 discount.
