Honda Announces World Conference in Ohio
11/27/96
Honda Associates From Around the World in Ohio for World Convention MARYSVILLE, Ohio, Nov. 25 -- Honda associates from 16 countries are in central Ohio today for the kick-off of the 1996 NH Circle World Convention, an event that promotes global teamwork and sharing of ideas. This is the first time that the World Convention, held periodically since 1984, is being held outside Japan. Hosted by Honda of America Mfg. (HAM), the event is being held at various locations around Ohio, including Columbus, Marysville, East Liberty, Anna and Troy. "This convention proves how well Honda's operations in the Americas have succeeded to create an increasingly self-reliant manufacturer of automobiles, motorcycles, power products and all-terrain vehicles," said HAM President Takeo Fukui. "It also underscores Honda's growth as a global enterprise." NH Circles -- often referred to as quality circles -- are small groups of associates who identify and implement improvements in safety, quality, efficiency and the work environment. Honda helped pioneer quality circles in the United States by starting NH Circles at its U.S. facilities in 1985. Since then, quality circles have become commonplace across the nation. NH Circles continue to be vital to Honda's future. Approximately 100,000 associates from Honda and its suppliers are involved in 12,000 NH Circles worldwide. About 2,000 of HAM's associates participate in 400 NH Circles. NH Circles have been a key to Honda's success at building superior quality products, said Rick Schostek, HAM Senior Manager in charge of the convention. "We believe our associates are the experts in their work areas," added Schostek. "No one knows better than our associates how to get the job done in the most efficient manner, and how to make improvements in our operations." Participants in the World Convention represent companies in each of Honda's four operating regions: Japan, Asia/Oceania, Europe/Africa/Middle East, and the Americas. In addition, most members of Honda's Board of Directors are participating. The two-day event will include team-building activities, presentations on NH Circle projects, and speeches by Honda Motor Co. President Nobuhiko Kawamoto, Columbus Mayor Gregory Lashutka and Ohio Governor George Voinovich. Honda of America Mfg. employs more than 12,500 associates at its four plants in central Ohio with a capital investment of $3.15 billion. Products manufactured include the Acura CL series; the Accord Sedan, Coupe and Wagon; the Civic Sedan and Coupe; the Gold Wing, Valkyrie and other large capacity motorcycles and ATVs; and engines and drivetrain components for both automobiles and motorcycles.
