Penske Announces NASCAR Doublheader for the New California Speedway

Penske Motorsports Announces NASCAR Doubleheader at California Speedway DETROIT, Nov. 19 -- Penske Motorsports, Inc. (PMI) today announced that the California Speedway (TCS) has added a special NASCAR doubleheader scheduled for the weekend of October 17-19, 1997, featuring a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race and a NASCAR Busch Series Grand National race. The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series will debut at the California Speedway on Saturday, October 18 in a 200 mile contest. On Sunday, October 19, the NASCAR 300 mile Busch Series Grand National race will take place, the next to last event for the 29-race schedule. The California Speedway is a state-of-the-art two-mile superspeedway currently under construction in San Bernardino County, California. According to Les Richter, executive vice president, the facility will accommodate over 80,000 race fans. The inaugural "California 500 presented by NAPA" scheduled for Sunday June 22, 1997, marks the return of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series to Southern California for the first time since the 1988 Riverside race. In addition, the California Speedway will return CART Indy car racing to an oval track in Southern California for the first time since 1983. CART's PPG Indy Car World Series will conclude its 17-race schedule on Sunday, September 28 at TCS with a 500 mile event presented by Toyota with the title sponsor to be announced at a later date.
