Historical Museum Displays Chrysler's History and a Look at the Future AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Nov. 19 -- Chrysler Corporation today broke ground for the recently announced Chrysler Historical Museum which is expected to open in 1998. The museum will be located on a 10- acre site at the southeast corner of Featherstone Road and Squirrel Road near the Company's headquarters in Auburn Hills. The Chrysler Historical Museum is the first dedicated, on-site museum built by any American automobile company. The design of the two-story, 35,000 square foot museum will include display space for 40 vehicles, a theater, gift shop, archive and research area, administrative offices, center atrium, courtyard and storage space for an additional 75 vehicles. "As we near the 75th anniversary of Chrysler Corporation, we have a long and proud history to look back on," said Robert J. Eaton, Chairman and CEO of Chrysler Corporation. "But more importantly, we're a Company with a bright present and even brighter future and this museum, will allow us to show both sides of Chrysler." Previously, the Company housed a portion of its vehicle collection in the former styling dome at its Highland Park facility while other products were stored in old factories and warehouses. After its opening, the new museum will have scheduled events for the public but will not be available for general admission until a later unspecified date. The exterior of the museum will reflect the look of the Chrysler Technology Center and corporate headquarters with polished red granite and black glass. The skylight in the center atrium is similar to the skylights at the technology center. Giffels and Associates designed the building but a general contractor has not been named.
