11/20/96
GM's EV1 Arrives in Southern California THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., Nov. 18 -- The first shipment of General Motor's Corporation EV1 electric cars was ceremonially unloaded from rail cars today at the Southern California Automotive Distribution Center in San Bernardino, CA. "Watching the EV1 roll off these rail cars today illustrates that the electric car is charged up and ready for sale in California," said John Dunlap III, chairman of the California Air Resources Board (CARB), who spoke at a ceremony held at the Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail yard. "With these EV1s, General Motors is showing the world what can be done when industry and government act as partners instead of adversaries. We get advanced technology and cleaner air," Dunlap said. John Longville, mayor of the city of Rialto (CA) and chairman of the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee, said, "I am proud to witness this historic partnership between the Southern California Air Quality Management District, local government and General Motors, which has brought about a technological and marketing breakthrough." "This event marks the passing of the torch from the GM Advanced Technology Vehicles manufacturing team to the Saturn retail network and marketing teams," said Don Young, Saturn's West Regional manager. "With this torch comes a vote of confidence from GM and a level of responsibility to GM that we don't take lightly. Saturn accepts the challenge with great pride and enthusiasm. We are confident the right systems are in place to successfully market EV1," Young added. Twenty-six Saturn retailers in Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix and Tucson will begin to market EV1 cars on Dec. 5. General Motors Chairman Jack Smith drove the first ceremonial vehicle off the assembly line at the Lansing (MI) Craft Center last week.
