Hayes Wheels International Receives Fabricated
Aluminum Wheel Contract from General Motors
ROMULUS, Mich., Nov. 12 -- Hayes Wheels
International, Inc. has received a contract from
General Motors Corporation to supply fabricated aluminum
wheels for several of the automaker's mid-size vehicle platforms, as
well as the Chevrolet Lumina, Oldsmobile Silhouette and Pontiac Trans
Sport minivans, beginning with the 1997 model year.
Shipment of the lightweight fabricated aluminum wheels began in
July from the company's manufacturing facility in Romulus, Mich.
"This contract is indicative of the continued effort by automakers
to reduce vehicle weight," said Ron Cucuz, chairman and chief
executive officer. "Since its introduction in 1994, our lightweight
fabricated aluminum wheel technology has been chosen by several
leading automotive manufacturers in the U.S. and Europe to meet their
weight-reduction requirements without sacrificing strength or
quality."
The ultra-lightweight fabricated aluminum wheels achieve their
significant weight reduction through innovative manufacturing
processes involving patented aluminum welding and spinning technology.
The end result is a fabricated aluminum wheel that is 45 percent
lighter than a traditional steel wheel and nearly 20 percent lighter
than its cast aluminum counterpart.
Hayes Wheels International is a world leader in the design,
engineering and manufacture of steel and aluminum wheels and brake
drums and rotors for the automotive and commercial highway markets in
North America, Europe and Asia.
