GM Names Information-Systems Executive
DETROIT, Nov. 11 -- Cherri M. Musser, an information-
technology executive with 23 years of diverse professional experience,
has been named corporate systems information officer for General
Motors Corporation , effective Nov. 11, 1996.
GM Vice President and Chief Information Officer Ralph J. Szygenda
said Musser will be one of the top leaders in GM's newly organized
Information Systems and Services (IS&S) organization. She will be
responsible for providing world-class information-technology (IT)
applications for support- staff activities at the corporate,
business-sector and unit level worldwide, including finance, contract
administration, human resources, purchasing, legal and corporate
affairs organizations.
"This is the first of several actions we're taking to rebuild a
strong information-technology core within GM, focused on common
processes for global information management and communication,"
Szygenda said.
"Cherri will play an important role in facilitating common systems
across the corporation in the area of staff support," Szygenda said.
"Her background and experience in streamlining business-information
systems will be critical as we work with our support staffs to provide
them with leading-edge information-technology and communication tools
that will allow them to be more effective and efficient in supporting
GM's core business activities," he explained.
Musser started her IT career at Texas Instruments in 1973 as a
programmer analyst in its Instruments Information Systems and Services
organization. Since then, she held numerous positions at Texas
Instruments, where she worked closely with business units to provide
systems in support of human resources, financial planning and control,
material management, order processing, inventory and logistics.
As director of corporate business systems at Texas Instruments,
Musser was responsible for re-engineering material management,
order-fulfillment, and customer-communications processes, and
implementing worldwide enterprise- procurement and order-processing
and financial systems to support those common re-engineered processes.
Musser was responsible for marketing and implementing those
applications with external customers as part of a start-up,
applications-software strategic-business unit.
Since 1994, Musser served as vice president of worldwide research
and development in Texas Instrument's Software Division, where she
headed product development and provided market-leading
application-development tools to external customers worldwide.
Musser implemented process improvements for product planning and
software development that resulted in more timely delivery of several
new application- development tools.
Musser earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics and computer
science from Mississippi State University in 1973, and received a
master's degree in business administration from Southern Methodist
University in 1986.
