The GM EV1 Receives Four Awards at the 1996 Society of Plastics Engineers Awards Program

DETROIT, Nov. 11 -- General Motors revolutionary
electric vehicle -- EV1 -- took top honors at the recent Society of
Plastics Engineers Automotive Division Annual Awards Program at the
Westin Hotel in Detroit.
The structural battery tray on the 1997 EV1 was named SPE's grand
award winner at the group's 26th annual awards banquet. EV1 also
picked up awards in the Material Processing Category for its composite
rear suspension link, the Chassis Hardware Category for its composite
battery tray and was bestowed a Special Recognition Award for the
innovative use of plastics throughout the EV1.
Jim Ellis, Director of Engineering for GM's Advanced Technology
Vehicles, commenting on the awards said, "The benefits received from
the use of plastics in the EV1 -- reduced mass, cost and total number
of parts -- directly contributed to making the vehicle the world's
most energy-efficient production automobile."
The EV1 will be available for customer delivery beginning December
5 through Saturn retail facilities in the greater Los Angeles, San
Diego, Phoenix and Tucson marketing areas.
