GM Leadership Team Establishes Residency at New Global Headquarters
DETROIT, Nov. 11 -- General Motors' management team,
led by Chairman John F. Smith, Jr., and Vice Chairman Harry Pearce
moved Monday from the 14th floor of the corporation's landmark
headquarters building in the New Center area to its new home, the
General Motors Global Headquarters at The Renaissance Center.
Accompanying Smith and Pearce to the new executive offices in
Tower 100 at Renaissance Center were other key executives, along with
support staff. All together, the group numbered around 70.
"This move represents much more than a change in location," said
Smith. "It allows us an opportunity to redefine the way we work
together as an organization. The layout of the building provides
opportunities for a collaborative work environment that simply are not
available in a 'traditional' office environment of fixed walls and
long corridors," said Smith. "The sheer size and physical
characteristics of the building allow GM to bring together people and
units from throughout southeast Michigan."
General Motors employees will move into the Renaissance
Center gradually over the next five years. Marketing and support
units from across southeast Michigan will eventually be housed in the
2.2 million-square-feet of office space that the four towers provide.
Following the executive staff to the Renaissance Center will be the
Pontiac/GMC marketing division, which will move approximately 400
employees into seven floors of Tower 100 sometime this spring.
Eventually, General Motors Global Headquarters at The Renaissance
Center will be home to some 9,000 employees.
Plans for the facility's public areas call for a corporate
heritage museum and a GM University. The heritage museum will provide
visitors, business associates, GM employees and their families an
interactive look at GM products -- from historic cars, to modern
prototype vehicles and satellites. The GM University will be a
state-of-the-art conference center where GM team members from around
the world will come to upgrade their skills and stay current with the
latest trends in all aspects of the company's core business.
"The choice of the Renaissance Center as our new global
headquarters says a lot about where this company is headed, and the
qualities we think are important for corporate growth and prosperity
in the next Century," said Smith. "The ability to renovate an
existing facility rather than build from scratch, and remain
headquartered in downtown Detroit were both important variables in the
decision to move to the Renaissance Center," he said.
"In addition, General Motors' global headquarters will signal our
focus on people, and the belief that GM's future will be created by
drawing on their expertise, creativity, values and passion. Our
headquarters will be an epicenter for the renaissance of GM's
corporate culture and of the city of Detroit," said Smith.
