PRESS RELEASE
General Motors Announces Safety Recall
DETROIT, Nov. 11 -- General Motors today
announced a safety recall involving approximately 49,000 1996 model
year Buick Skylark and Oldsmobile Achieva model vehicles to install a
plastic edge protector on an instrument panel bracket that has a rough
lower edge.
Customers will be notified by mail to take their vehicles to their
dealership for the necessary repairs. All vehicles will be repaired at no
cost to the customer.
During an air bag deployment in these vehicles, there is the
potential for the passenger side air bag to snag on the instrument
panel reinforcement bracket causing the expanding bag to lift the
instrument panel and then to deploy behind the instrument panel
instead of through the door in the instrument panel. The
reinforcement bracket may also fracture. In a crash, the front seat
passenger could receive more severe injuries if he or she contacts a
broken reinforcement or if the snagging affects the air bag
deployment.
General Motors has received no reports of crashes or injuries
resulting from this condition.
