GM Announces Promotion for Two Executives

GM Promotes Two Executives DETROIT, Nov. 4 -- The General Motors Board of Directors approved the promotion of two executives, it was announced today by GM Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President John F. Smith, Jr. John R. Rines, GM vice president and president of General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAC) was promoted to group executive. M. A. "Raz" Razaq, a GM Europe vice president of Sales, Marketing and Aftersales, was elected a GM vice president. The promotions are effective immediately. Rines, 49, a member of the GMAC Board of Directors, is responsible for GMAC activities worldwide, including its insurance and mortgage subsidiaries. He will continue to report to J. Michael Losh, GM executive vice president and chief financial officer. Rines joined GM in 1970. He has held a variety of GM operating and financial positions in the U.S. and internationally, including general manager of GM Service Parts Operations, executive director of finance for GM do Brasil, and general manager of Motors Holding Division. He was named president and chief operating officer of GMAC in June 1992, and was elected a GM vice president in July 1994. A native of Baltimore, Md., Rines received a bachelor's degree in economics from Colorado State University in 1969, and an MBA from the University of Virginia in 1977. Razaq, 62, a member of GM's European Strategy Board since November 1994, was named GM Europe vice president of Sales, Marketing and Aftersales on November 1, 1996. Previously, he had been executive director of sales for GM Europe since April 1993. Razaq joined General Motors in June 1967 and held several positions in sales management in Germany, Greece, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. He moved to GM Espana in 1980 as director of sales and marketing and played a major role in starting up GM's operations in Spain. Razaq was named a GM Europe regional director, Eastern Europe and Export Markets, in June 1990, and was appointed regional director for European sales in July 1992. A native of Islamabad, Pakistan, Razaq earned a bachelor of economics degree from the London School of Economics in 1954. He has also attended the Advance Management Program at the University of Virginia.
