1 November 1996
DETROIT, Oct. 31 -- General Motors and its employees have pledged more money to the 1996 nationwide United Way campaign than any other U.S. corporation, United Way officials confirmed today. The total GM pledge of $37.3 million includes $32.8 million from GM hourly and salaried employees, and a corporate gift of $4.5 million from the GM Foundation. Total pledges in the 1996 campaign increased nearly $500,000 compared with 1995. United Way Community Services, the United Way chapter serving southeastern Michigan, reported today that GM contributed $10.1 million to the 1996 regional fundraising campaign, including $8.8 million from GM employees and a GM corporate gift of $1.3 million. This was the second year in which GM used a nationwide electronic system for both hourly and salaried employees to enroll in the United Way campaign. Virgil Carr, president of United Way Community Services, said, "GM's contributions to both the Detroit area and other communities throughout the United States where GM has operations will provide a strong foundation for community-service organizations that support a wide variety of health and human service needs."
