10/28/96
Honda Putting Down Roots in Loudon LOUDON, Tenn., Oct. 24 -- Over four hundred fifty students from Loudon Elementary School, along with school officials and Loudon Mayor Bernie Swiney, gathered today for a tree planting ceremony at American Honda's new parts distribution center. The students, spades in hand, eagerly took up the task of planting some five hundred fifty Loblolly Pine, White Pine, Sawtooth Oak, Sweet Gum, Tulip Poplar and White Ash saplings on the land surrounding the 827,000 square foot warehouse facility. "This is a very nice gesture by Honda and a lot of fun for the children," said Mayor Swiney. "It really symbolizes Honda's commitment to the community." A commemorative plaque, to be displayed in the lobby of the Honda facility, will identify each student and the location of their particular tree on the property. "Next week, next month, or five years from now, a student can come to the facility and see how their tree is getting along," said Tony Piazza, senior manager of American Honda's facilities planning group. "This is Honda's way of saying we're here to stay." The state-of-the-art warehouse sits on 220 acres of land in southwest Loudon County, and will serve as the central distribution point for delivery of parts and accessories to Honda automobile, motorcycle and power equipment dealers throughout the country. A grand opening ceremony is scheduled for Friday, October 25, beginning at 10:30 a.m. Expected to attend are Loudon Mayor Bernie Swiney, Congressman John J. Duncan, Jr., and Robert Weil, vice president of American Honda Motor Co., Inc.
