GM Announces Lay-Offs in Response to the CAW Strike (as of 10/23/96)

General Motors Update on Operations Affected by the Work Stoppage by
the Canadian Auto Workers

WARREN, Mich., Oct. 23 -- As of 4 p.m.  EDT Wednesday,
October 23, 1996, there have been 19,159 GM North American employees
(U.S. and Mexico) affected by the work stoppage in Canada. There has
been no change in the number of employees affected since this
morning's report.

A tentative agreement was reached yesterday between the Canadian Auto
Workers and General Motors of Canada. However, we cannot speculate on
when workers in the U.S. and Mexico will return to their
operations. In addition we cannot speculate on additional facilities
that could be affected by the work stoppage in Canada. It will depend
on how soon GM of Canada is able to get their plants back in operation
after ratification.

Our next update will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 24, 1996. Updates
on GM facilities affected will be available at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. each
day on PR Newswire and GM's media internet site. Audio updates are

Delphi Automotive Systems will be issuing a separate report at 11
a.m. each day listing individual Delphi facilities that have been
affected. Delphi employee totals are included in GM's daily totals.
