1970 American Motors Corp buys Kaiser Jeep Corp. 1973 Mideast oil crisis hurts Chryslers big car sales. 1976 Chrysler sells Airtemp heating/cooling company to Fedders 1978 Chrysler European units sold to Peugeot: Dodge Omni, Plymouth Horizon appear as first U.S. built sub-compacts. 1979 Chrysler faces potential bankruptcy: company receives U.S. loan guarantees. 1980 K Cars debut as 1981 models 1983 Chrysler pays back Uncle Sam seven years early. Iacocca claims he did it. Minivan is introduced. 1987 Chrysler and American Motors merge. 1988 Chrysler establishes Eagle as a brand . . . its first new brand since 1928 1989 Dodge Viper concept car debuts at auto shows to rave revues. 1992 Chrysler introduces LH family of cab forward cars. It's a home run. 1994 Company reports record net earnings of $3.713 billion. 1995 Investor Kirk Kerkorian along with Iacocca tries unsuccessful takeover bid. 1996 Chrysler dedicates its Auburn Hills World Headquarters building in Michigan.
