Mitsubishi Announces Cyber Car Sales Through Internet
10/17/96
Manheim Auctions and Mitsubishi Open Newest 'Cyberlot' on the Internet Mitsubishi Direct Will Sell Diamond Select Cars Exclusively Through World Wide Web Site ATLANTA, Oct. 15 -- Manheim Auctions and Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America (MMSA) created a "cyberlot" on Manheim's World Wide Web site to offer Diamond Select(TM) certified vehicles. Called Mitsubishi Direct, the online service allows registered Mitsubishi dealers to preview and purchase Diamond Select(TM) cars over the Internet. The vehicles are specially chosen, premium Mitsubishi units with less than 48,000 miles, under 48 months of use, that have passed a rigorous 110-point inspection and reconditioning process. By easily navigating through Mitsubishi Direct, dealers will be able to search for the vehicle(s) that meet their needs. In the cyberlot designed by Manheim's interactive services group, each car is individually described and shown in digital images, allowing dealers to personally estimate the value of each model, rather than depend on third-party rankings. With Mitsubishi Direct, Mitsubishi joins an expanding list of automakers that turn to Manheim's Internet capabilities to sell vehicles. LFS Direct, which markets off-lease Lexus vehicles through the Manheim's World Wide Web site to registered dealers, has sold more than $11 million worth of cars in five months. All Diamond Select(TM) vehicles come with a 12 months/12,000 miles extended service plan, including a powertrain warranty for five years/60,000 miles from original inservice date, 24-hour roadside service, rental assistance, trip interruption and tire protection, among other features. These premium cars are inspected, certified and marshalled at the Mitsubishi Quality Assurance Center in Brunswick, Ga. Now in its testing stage, Mitsubishi Direct was launched in the Southeast (Ala., Ga., Fla., Miss., Ky., N.C., S.C., and Tenn.) on Oct. 1. Soon, all 511 nationwide Mitsubishi dealers will be able to access the cyberlot. Future plans between Mitsubishi and Manheim include setting up a "cyberauction," the first of its kind in the world, which will mix the most important and exciting features of auto auctions with the instantaneous access provided by the Internet. This cyberauction is projected to start by year-end. Atlanta-based Manheim Auctions is the largest, highest-volume automobile auction company in the world with 62 locations in the United States and Canada. In 1995, Manheim handled more than 4.6 million vehicles and had sales in excess of $20 billion.
