Inland Steel and Gentex Report Minimal Impact from CAW Strike
10/17/96
GM and its Delphi subsidiary have both begun to shut down assembly lines and lay-off workers throughout the U.S. and Mexico in response to the Canadian Auto Worker's strike against GM Canada. The CAW has 28,000 workers out on strike, and has completely shutdown GM Canada's operations, but Reuters reports that neither Inland Steel nor Gentex have yet acknowledged any impact from the strike. Inland Steel ships steel to GM, while Gentex supplies the automaker with automatic dimming rearview mirrors and fire protection products. GM is the U.S. Steel industry's single biggest customer, and the strike will reportedly affect Inland's shipments, unless GM settles with Canadian workers soon.
