Rockwell Announces On-Board Navigation System Based on AAA TourBook
10/16/96
Rockwell's PathMaster(TM) Driver Information and Navigation System To Feature AAA TourBook(R) Tour Guide Travel Information ORLANDO, Fla., Oct. 14 -- Rockwell's Driver Information Systems business and AAA have joined forces to make Rockwell's PathMaster(TM) Driver Information and Navigation system as useful to travelers as hotel reservations. Beginning in 1997, PathMaster databases will include AAA TourBook(R) tour guide travel information. The PathMaster system is manufactured by Rockwell. "We are pleased to announce this agreement between two industry leaders," said Roger A. Stevens, general manager for Rockwell Driver Information Systems. "The PathMaster system provides motorists with increased confidence and security while on the road, and millions of people rely on AAA TourBook(R) tour guide travel information for accurate information about hotels, restaurants and local attractions throughout the United States. Combining The PathMaster system with AAA TourBook(R) tour guide information will mean unmatched convenience and confidence for travelers." Because AAA TourBook(R) tour guide information is available exclusively to AAA members, Rockwell will provide purchasers of The PathMaster system with a one-year AAA membership, which will include such service as: complete roadside assistance; personalized travel routings and specially negotiated travel fares; no fee travelers' checks; and emergency check cashing. Purchasers who are already AAA members will receive a credit toward their next year's membership fee. "Our members turn to AAA for travel information they can trust, and therefore we're extremely cautious about forming partnerships with other companies," said J. Steven Pike, managing director, Business Markets Division for AAA. "Potential AAA partners must share our commitment to product innovation and outstanding customer service, and we're pleased to say that Rockwell shares these values." The PathMaster integrates a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, as well as dead-reckoning and map-matching technologies to establish a vehicle's precise location, and includes an on-board computer and database that calculates the most efficient route to pre-selected destinations. Drivers can keep their eyes on the road, as the system literally instructs them what to do and where to go with voice commands. Database Information Available With The PathMaster System A series of easy-to-read menus will allow motorists to select from thousands of AAA TourBook(R) tour guide destinations incorporated into The PathMaster system's databases, including restaurants, lodging and attractions. According to Stevens, Rockwell has organized the system in a similar manner to the AAA TourBook(R) tour guide. "Users will now be able to search The PathMaster system's database to find the nearest restaurant, place of lodging or attraction, or they can tailor and focus a search based on specific criteria," Stevens said. "For example, a member could ask for the nearest restaurant with a minimum AAA Three Diamond rating." Stevens added that Restaurants can be selected based on AAA Diamond rating, cost range, location and type of food served. Lodgings are divided into AAA Diamond rating, cost range, location and type (bed-and-breakfast, motel or hotel), while Attractions are similarly grouped by type (museums, aquariums, theme parks, etc.). According to Stevens, all databases will also include information on: 1. Detailed City Coverage -- Virtually every detail of a city is covered, including block-by-block addresses and five digit zip code ranges, as well as classification of freeways, expressways, toll roads, and residential streets. Roadway characteristics such as one-way information, turn restrictions and number of lanes are also included. 2. Inter-Town Coverage -- Information stored on the database connects detailed city coverage areas and includes interstate, federal, state and county roads as well as roads leading to named locations with a population exceeding 500. The database also includes all roads contained on AAA state and provincial maps. 3. Points of Interest and Landmarks -- With the press of a button, drivers can call up directional information to airports, bus terminals, AAA recommended hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions, as well as hospitals, gas stations, shopping centers and malls, bridges, tunnels, post offices and much more. How The PathMaster System Works A series of easy-to-read menus allows the motorist to select from hundreds of pre-programmed destinations or to enter a specific address or intersection. The PathMaster system provides motorists with information, literally at their fingertips, on how to find local hotels, gas stations, ATMs, restaurants and thousands of other possible destinations. Regardless of how a destination is selected, The PathMaster system calculates the most efficient route, and can provide alternatives in the event that a motorist wishes to avoid freeways. Once the destination is selected, The PathMaster system begins its search outward from the known location to the requested destination, reviewing all possible routes simultaneously. The PathMaster system then begins to eliminate possibilities based on speed limits, road class (highway, surfaced, unsurfaced), and the number of maneuvers (for example, right turns are more desirable than left turns), until one route remains. Then, voice commands and easy-to-read turn icons guide the motorist, turn-by-turn, to the destination. The system visually and audibly alerts drivers to upcoming turns, exits and merges, and will recalculate routes at the touch of a button if a command is ignored. This feature is particularly useful when a motorist must change course because of heavy traffic or detours. Major metro markets where The PathMaster system is available for purchase include: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Orlando, San Francisco and Washington, D.C. Rockwell's PathMaster system is Hertz's choice for navigation, and is now available at Hertz airport and rental locations in several major cities as the "NeverLost(SM)," Rockwell has also manufactured navigation system hardware used by Avis, National Car Rental and Oldsmobile. Rockwell is actively producing new electronic components and systems for the transportation industries, and many Rockwell technologies, such as the GPS satellite receivers which Rockwell has been building for commercial and military applications for 15 years, are now being introduced in automotive applications.
