10/15/96
Ford Motor Company's Louisville Plant Celebrates Employee Contributions and Multi-Million Milestone LOUISVILLE, Ky., Oct. 12 -- Antique cars, concept trucks, race-team vehicles and a live employee band were just some of the highlights of an all-day employee celebration at Ford Motor Company's Kentucky Truck Plant on Chamberlain Lane today. The "Ford Family" celebration commemorated the contributions Louisville employees have made to the success of Ford Motor Company which, since 1903, has produced 250 million vehicles -- enough cars and trucks to stretch bumper-to-bumper 30 times around the world or a half-million miles beyond the moon. Ford's Louisville employees have heavily contributed to that total. Louisville employees produced well over a half-million trucks in 1995 at Kentucky Truck Plant (KTP) and Louisville Assembly Plant (LAP), Employees from both plants participated in today's celebration. Family members also were invited. Ford began operating in Louisville in 1913 when a few mechanics produced 12 Model-Ts per-day in a little shop on South Third Street. As they did in 1913, Ford's Louisville employees still are building best-sellers: Ford Explorer, Ford Ranger and commercial versions of Ford's F-Series truck. Ford's three-million-square-foot Louisville Assembly Plant on Fern Valley Road produced more than 400,000 of two of the best-selling trucks in America -- Ford Explorer and Ford Ranger -- in 1995. Ford Explorer is America's best-selling sport utility vehicle, and Ford Ranger is the best-selling compact pickup truck. Ford's Kentucky Truck Plant, across town, produced nearly 190,000 trucks in 1995 -- including commercial versions of Ford F-Series trucks. The commercial truck plant, which is larger than 400 football fields, is the largest truck plant in North America. Ford F-Series is the best-selling vehicle in America -- car or truck.
