GM Brazil to Sell Cars to South Africa

10/15/96

Reuters has reported that General Motor's Brazilian unit plans to export 25,000 small Corsa cars to South Africa over the next 12 months. Directors from General Motors do Brasil will to travel to South Africa later this month in order to launch the Corsa models on the South African market. A GM Brazil spokesman indicated that the plans formed part of an attempt to turn the Brazilian unit into a "world export base."

In addition to selling Corsa models in South Africa, General Motors do Brazil will export 60,000 sport utility Blazers to Russia beginning in the next few months. It also expects negotiations that would allow it to export the Corsa to China and the countries of the Andean Pact to be concluded by the end of the year.

Export revenues at the Brazilian unit are expected to reach $700 million this year and $1 billion in 1997, the spokesman said. GM's total Brazilian revenues are projected to reach $8 billion in 1996.
