J.D. Power Announces GM as First Chairman's Award Recipient

GM Receives the First Ever Chairman's Award From J.D. Power
and Associates

WARREN, Mich., Oct. 9 -- Citing unique and special
accomplishments on the part of General Motors Corporation, J.D. Power
III, chairman and CEO of J.D. Power and Associates, today presented
General Motors the first ever Chairman's Award. The award was
presented to John F. Smith, Jr., GM chairman, and G. Richard Wagoner,
Jr., president GM's North American Operations.

In a special ceremony with employees, dealers, and suppliers at GM's
Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, Mr. Power noted the award is
different from other study-specific awards and is presented to GM,
"based on its consecutive top-ranked performance for nine of the past
10 years in sales satisfaction."

"Based on our findings, General Motors has, for five consecutive years
been the top ranked corporation in initial sales satisfaction covering
satisfaction with the purchase, delivery, and initial vehicle
condition," stated Mr. Power.

In accepting the award, GM chairman Jack Smith stated that the
Chairman's Award is a special tribute to all employees in North
America, dealers and suppliers who have worked so hard to regain
customer focus and market momentum.

"Receiving the Chairman's Award means we're doing the right things for
more customers, and we are very pleased to say so," stated
Mr. Wagoner. "Our goal is to lead, not only in 1996 with the
Chairman's Award, but in every area, category, and segment that
J.D. Power and Associates measures," Mr. Wagoner added.

J.D. Power and Associates both at the make and model level:

Study (APEAL), "Most Appealing Premium Midsize Car"
