10/09/96
The Saab 900 Talladega Challenge Countdown is On! Want to join Saab trackside? Talladega website goes live today NORCROSS, Ga., Oct. 7 -- On October 14, 1996, two silver Saab 900 Turbos will begin a grueling 25,000 mile journey at Talladega Superspeedway, Alabama -- and you can be part of the track crew starting today. The endurance/speed run is being documented by 120 journalists from five continents, but you don't have to be a member of the press to participate. Just point your PC to "http://www.saabusa.com/talladega" and you'll get daily reports on who's getting the fastest lap times and which endurance records are being broken. The site, a section within the Saab Cars USA, Inc. "saabusa.com" website, also includes a complete history of the 1986 Talladega Long Run, views and comments from the driver's seat, and sponsor information. The Saab 900 Talladega Challenge is to survive ten days of non-stop, top-speed driving, rain or shine, on one of the world's fastest and longest race tracks -- Talladega Superspeedway. Saab's goal: beat 18 existing endurance and speed records, established a decade ago by two Saab 9000 Turbos and still unchallenged today. Joining the two Saab 900 Turbos on the high speed banks of Talladega will be four additional Saabs, featuring Saab V6 and 4-cylinder engines. These four competitors, driven exclusively by participating journalists, will leave the line for daily 12-hour non-stop "runs," also at pedal-to-the-floor top speeds. The first group, composed of journalists from Germany, Italy, Australia, Japan, Thailand and Taiwan arrives in Atlanta for the short trip to Talladega on October 14, with competitive licenses in hand and driving suits at the ready. Subsequent groups of automotive writers and race enthusiasts are coming to participate in the Talladega Challenge from the Nordic countries, every major European nation, Russia, Turkey, Hungary and Poland. Team USA and Canada comprise the final group, and will be at the finish line at 7:00 p.m. on October 24, when the chequered flag comes down after 25,000 grueling miles.
