General Motors Announces Strong Third Quarter Production
Results

WARREN, Mich., Oct. 7 -- For the third quarter, GM North
American Operations produced a total of 1,262,000 passenger cars and
trucks. Third quarter production exceeded projections by some 17,000
total vehicles. Strong third quarter production results were primarily
due to an effective 1997 new model start up.

In addition, GM produced a total of 467,000 vehicles in the United
States, Canada and Mexico during the month of September.

GM's production forecast for the fourth quarter remained at 1,320,000
total vehicles. The fourth quarter forecast is slightly less than
1995, due to several plants being down for model changeovers.
