Toyota Announces Strong September Sales, Camry Closes Out
Model-Year With Sixth Record Month

TORRANCE, Calif., Oct. 3 -- Toyota Motor Sales (TMS),
U.S.A., Inc., today announced September vehicle sales of 85,091, an
increase of 14.2 percent over the previous year. On a year-to-date
basis, sales of 885,512 are 7.0 percent ahead of last year's record
pace.

"The strong sales and steady growth we have seen this year reflect a broad-based confidence in the economy," said Yale Gieszl, TMS executive vice president. "Household income is up and consumers are more willing to commit to big-ticket items."

Toyota's strong sales were led by Camry with 26,528 units, up 20.1 percent, registering its best-ever September and sixth best-ever month of the model year. The all-new 1997 Camry was off to a great start, accounting for 12,449 of the total sales. Also showing well was Avalon with sales of 6,049 units, up 26.2 percent and registering its best-ever September.

Toyota's trucks and sport utility vehicles (SUV) also were strong during September with total trucks up 41.5 percent and SUVs up 51.9 percent. Total Tacoma sales of 13,531 represented an increase of 44.4 percent. Total T100 sales of 3,205 were up 30.3 percent. With demand outstripping supply, 4Runner sales of 5,442 were down 14 percent for the month, although year-to-date numbers remain 30.1 percent ahead of last year.

Due to an extremely tight twelve-day supply, the Lexus Division reported total sales of 5,579, up 0.9 percent. With only a fifteen-day supply behind it, the LS 400 sold 2,013 units, up 9.4 percent, while a six-day supply held ES 300 to 2,674, down 11.0 percent. The LX 450 SUV, with only a seven-day supply, sold 400 units.

Toyota continues to increase the percentage of locally produced units with 61.1 percent of the vehicles sold last month built in North America.

There were 24 selling days this year, versus 25 last year.
