Volkswagen Announces September Sales

Volkswagen Sales up Again -- Best September Since 1988

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Oct. 2 -- Volkswagen of America,
Inc. reported its best September sales results in the U.S. in eight
years.

The German automaker sold 12,687 new cars in September, representing a
15.3 percent increase over 1995's September figure of 11,002.

This September's mark was the best posted by Volkswagen in the
U.S. since 1988.

For the year, Volkswagen has sold 106,948, up 15.1 percent over the
same period in 1995 when the figure was 92,948. For the second
consecutive year, Volkswagen has exceeded the 100,000 sales mark, with
this year's year-to-date pace being the fastest since 1990.

Volkswagen's sales were again led by its popular Jetta model which is
enjoying one of its best sales years ever.  Jetta sales for September
were 8,416 up 15.4 percent over 1995 when they were 7,291. For the
year, Jetta sales are 67,675 up 11 percent from 1995 when they were
60,950.

Sales of Volkswagen's mid-sized Passat sedan and wagon were up as
well, totaling 1,733, an increase of 33.6 percent over 1995's mark of
1,297.
