Canadian Auto Workers Strike GM Canada
10/03/96
General Motors of Canada failed to satisfy Canadian Auto Worker hopes for a new contract before last night's midnight strike deadline, and CAW unionists have gone on strike. Bargaining broke down when the midnight strike deadline passed without the two sides having reached an agreement. Buzz Hargrove called GM Canada's last offer to workers an "insult." The CAW represents 26,000 GM workers. The CAW is striking at parts plants that supply parts to other GM assembly plants in the US and Canada. Analysts say that GM will feel the effects of the strike at other assembly plants within a week.
