Ford Launches Multinational Sites on its Worldwide Connection on the Internet 'Virtual Tour' of Paris Motor Show also Featured on Ford's Expanded Internet Site PARIS, Oct. 1 -- Ford today announced in Europe the launch of more than 50 new sites within the Ford Worldwide Connection, creating the first fully integrated, multilingual automotive site offering both local and global information. Ford Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Alex Trotman announced the expansion of the company's Internet site at a press briefing prior to the opening of the Paris Motor Show, which also will be featured on Ford's Worldwide Connection. "The Worldwide Web is a perfect fit to the global concept of Ford 2000, which has stimulated all areas of the company to re-evaluate and re-engineer the processes we use to design, develop, manufacture and market our products," said Trotman. "The Internet is becoming a fundamental tool in marketing our products and disseminating information to our customers everywhere." Beginning today, web users in countries from France to Uruguay who access the Ford Worldwide Connection will enter directly into a national home page based on their log-on location. Available sites now include the United States (launched in July 1995), Brasil (launched in May 1996), and France, England, Canada. and more than 50 other countries to which Ford products are exported for sale, such as Belize and Singapore. All European sites will provide information in the local language tailored to local products and services, while using an international template that provides consistency across all the Ford sites. The French and U.K. sites coming on-line today will be followed within a few months by sites for Germany, Spain, Belgium, Switzerland, Portugal and Poland. Visitors to the European Ford web sites are greeted by the words of the company's founder, Henry Ford: "It has been my observation that most people get ahead during the time others waste." In line with this advice, the Ford home page enables the visitor to go directly to current product, dealer and Ford Credit financing information relevant to his or her location. Canada will offer information in both English and French, and sites for the export markets are being launched in English, with many planning to add local language capability as usage grows. Ford also is taking advantage of the Internet's unique communications capabilities by offering web users the opportunity to "visit" the Ford Stand at the Paris Motor Show. Paris is the fourth and final stop on Ford's "virtual tour" of the world's great motor shows during 1996, and coverage will be provided by a remote "sky eye" camera that has a 360 degree horizontal range, a 180 degree vertical range, and a 10-to-1 zoom capability. Kiosks at the Ford Stand at the Paris Show will enable visitors to access the Ford web sites and to see a model of the 'Ford Travelator,' a feature offered on the European web sites that takes the user on a trip to the 'past, present and future' of Ford. The address for the Ford Worldwide Connection is http://www.ford.com. The site was selected as the best among the U.S. automakers by U.S.A. Today in its first Web Score in May 1996, and currently records more than 10 million hits per month.
