Toyota Announces Cumulative North American Production at over 4 Million

Toyota Production In North America Tops Four Million

NEW YORK, Sept. 24 -- Toyota Motor Corp. (Nasdaq Small
Cap: TOYOY) started its localization of production in North America in
1986 when the first U.S.-built Toyota, a Corolla, rolled down the line
at NUMMI, New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. in Fremont,
California. It produced 14,246 Corollas in North America that
year. Ten years and more than $5 billion investment dollars later,
Toyota announces that as of the start of September 1996, Toyota's
cumulative production of cars and truck in North America exceed FOUR
MILLION.

4,045,147 Toyotas have been produced by Toyota's three North American
manufacturing facilities -- Toyota Motor Manufacturing U.S.A. (TMM) in
Georgetown, KY, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) in Cambridge,
Ontario and NUMMI, Toyota's joint venture with General Motors.

Toyota's strategy has been to localize the production of its most
popular and highest volume vehicles. It began with the Corolla in
1986, added the Camry in 1988, the small pick-up truck now called the
Tacoma in 1991, and the Avalon in 1994. Toyota will continue this
strategy by adding an all new mini- van to the production in Kentucky
during 1997 and is building a new facility in Gibson County, Indiana
to produce the T100 pickup truck with start of production slated for
1998. By 1998, Toyota's North American production capacity is expected
to exceed *1.2 million units annually.

Last week, Toyota broke ground for its new North American Corolla
engine plant in Putnam County, West Virginia. Toyota Motor
Manufacturing West Virginia (TMMWV) is expected to begin production in
the fall of 1998 and will represent an additional investment of $400
million in North American manufacturing. Toyota's third North American
engine plant will have the capacity to produce 300,000 engines
annually, increasing Toyota's engine production capacity in North
America to 800,000 units by 1998. Toyota also produces engines in
Kentucky and Canada.

Toyota is currently the fourth largest manufacturer of vehicles in
America with current investment in U.S. manufacturing, sales,
research & development, and parts distribution exceeding $5.8 billion
to date. Toyota's employment in the U.S. exceeds 19,000.
