Pontiac-GMC Dominates J.D. Power and Associates Study PONTIAC, Mich., Sept. 23 -- Pontiac-GMC Division dominated J.D. Power and Associates 1996 APEAL (Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout) Study, with models finishing highest in four of eleven categories -- more then any other automotive manufacturer in the world. The results of the study were just announced by the Agoura Hills, California marketing information firm. The study, which asked more than 25,000 new car and truck owners to rate their vehicles on more than 100 attributes after three months of ownership, is designed to identify what people really like about their new car or truck. Pontiac-GMC vehicles that were ranked most appealing in their respective categories according to the owners who were surveyed include the Pontiac Sunfire (compact category), Pontiac Grand Am (entry midsize category), Pontiac Bonneville (premium midsize category) and GMC Yukon (full-size SUV category). Two other Pontiac-GMC brands -- the Pontiac Trans Sport and GMC Sierra -- placed third in the compact van and full-size pick up categories, respectively. "The J.D. Power and Associates Study validates what we've known all along -- that our cars, trucks, vans and sport utility vehicles generate passion in the hearts and minds of their owners," said Roy S. Roberts, Pontiac-GMC general manager and a General Motors vice president. "We are extremely pleased with the study's results and look forward to increasing our leadership position next year." The highest rated features for the most appealing vehicles varied as widely as the categories themselves as the following list illustrates. These features dovetailed with Pontiac-GMC's target market for each of their vehicles. Sunfire -- Pontiac's sporty small car -- was hailed for its uniqueness of overall styling, side profile and appearance, front-end styling, and ergonomic comfort while driving. Pontiac targets Sunfire at young, on-the-go drivers who want to make going anywhere great fun in the sportiest, most exciting small car they can afford. Grand Am -- Pontiac's sales volume leader -- took top honors due to its ease of use of controls while driving, appearance of wheels and rims, rear end styling, and engine and automatic transmission performance. Pontiac targets Grand Am at active people who want the best combination of bold, distinctive styling, driving fun and value in a compact car. Bonneville -- Pontiac's flagship -- was applauded for smoothness of the automatic transmission, engine performance during rapid acceleration, rear leg/foot room, number of cupholders, ease of passenger entry and exit and rear passenger headroom. Pontiac targets Bonneville at uplevel, sport sedan enthusiasts who demand a unique combination of exciting style, outstanding performance and luxury features. Yukon -- GMC's record-setting full-size sport utility vehicle -- took top honors due to its front end styling, ease of passenger entry and exit, driver visibility, exterior color choices available, storage space available to the driver and number of cupholders. GMC targets Yukon at uncompromising achievers who demand a feeling of mastery in a distinctive utility that can take them anywhere, anytime, with a superior blend of space, power, comfort and enduring style.
